I suspect it's one of those cases where the writer could only get it produced with that cast, and that the intentions were for a younger set of performers.

And elements to it came across as too much a blatant ego-stroke.

I also get the feeling that this isn't a soap opera that, because of setting and cast, people are pretending is better than it actually is…..
