It would be nice if I could be so optimistic about what motivates the Academy- all the visible evidence, on the other hand, doesn't exactly speak to their better angels.

To be fair to us, note that the recent trend has been resistance to YA film adaptations- which is why the trend has died off to the point that they'd rather make more films about stuff that was already hits, rather than adapt new properties…..
And there are a lot of hit musicals of the last few decades for which the film rights are free…..
