I didn't think Lane's death was surprising - I won a bet even for that, in the "who's going to snuff it in MM this season given all the death anvils" bet - but I thought it was mostly effective.

Season 6 was probably the last season of The XFiles I watched the entirety of. S7-9, I only watched if a preview of an episode looked particularly interesting (like the Cops ep). I think they still did some good standalone episodes, but by S6 it was becoming very clear that the mythology was just one huge mess, and so
