Actually they explain the barricades and the placement of them better in the extended version than they did in the original.  The guns are placed inside the barricades (a last line of defense so to speak).  Hicks shows all of this on a map just a bit before the gun sequence.

I actually kind of liked the sense of dread that you get when Newt's family goes to explore the Alien ship…sure, you know he's coming back all face-huggered, but it's still cool to see (and hear the first of Newt's many, many screams).
