I was a very young teen when it came out, and I'm ashamed to say I thought Ethan Hawke's character was pretty much the coolest guy ever. Cause, like, he's way too artistic to have a job and stuff, and he's all, like, sensitive and witty and shit. I then spent the rest of my teens dating guys exactly like him,

I immediately thought of the episode of Saved By The Bell where the girls make a music video:

It's supposed to be so amazingly, outstandingly awesome that it's a guaranteed ticket to pop music stardom.

YES. In the context of the show, she's supposed to be a famous and succesful writer, and yet her column is full of the most god-awful puns imaginable and always includes the phrase "I couldn't help but wonder".

It's so frustrating how everyone can sing along with it and no one seems to realize what it's about.  Personally I think the sad subject matter makes it a better and more interesting song.

I was at a Mountain Goats show a couple of years ago, and when they played "Love Love Love" off "The Sunset Tree" there were couples holding each other, swaying in time to the music, and even kissing.  Did they listen to the lyrics at all?  I guess the line "love love love" is romantic if you ignore every other word

One thing I wish American films would learn from Ghibli (and other foreign films) is how to take their fucking time telling a story.  All those beautiful "pointless" shots build mood and emotion and a sense of place, and the cumulative effect is that those films pack a way bigger emotional punch than the ones that

Seriously.  I've seen it half a dozen times, but I still get tears in my eyes.  Happy, happy tears.

I'm kind of with you.  I mean, I get it enough to enjoy it and just go with the flow, but if I had to explain the whole plot with the star and the fire demon and the heart and stuff…  well, I could bullshit my way through it, but I honestly was pretty lost by that point.

I heard they changed "gods" to "spirits" because they thought American Christian audiences would get all huffy and wouldn't take their kids to see the movie.  Sadly, they may have been right.

They are sooo good.  Definitely some of my favorite graphic novels ever.

Have you read the graphic novels it's based on?  So fucking epic, my mind was blown, seriously.  Read them.

Howl's seems even more bewildering to me.  The whole thing with the stars/fire demon/heart, and then the thing at the end with the turnip head guy turning back into a prince almost as an afterthought…  It's pretty confusing.

My feelings exactly.  There are a few really memorable scenes, but all in all it's really uneven.  Still enjoyable, but nowhere near as perfect as some of his other films.
