Hearty recommendation for the source material. When he is on, Joe R. Lansdale is better than Elmore Leonard. In additional to the Hap & Leonard series, "Leather Maiden" was impossible to put down (the book, that is).

Excellent book along these lines = John Crowley's "Engine Summer". Such a great read and would make an excellent film in the right hands.
Another interesting take is found in Gene Wolfe's "Shadow of the Torturer" series where an animal which ingests the flesh of a person somehow distills the personality and memories

The Missus & I selected this for our first dance as well. Randy Newman's "Feel's Like Home" was up there on the list but the Zombie's jazz/pop is a lot easier for dancing.
