And she did witness a guy having a bug pulled out of his cheek after he was killed, and that the internal affairs guy was bought and paid for by the Proletheans. She didn't actually manage to save the guy she was…

I think it meshes. He was hard on her because he didn't want her throwing her life away. He wanted her to get through the investigation and continue being his partner.

He obviously realized it was not Beth. He went along with it for "science" and because he had chemistry with Sarah.

I think it makes perfect sense that Beth had another clone as her source, as she put it. How else would she have found out about the clones? It's not something you just stumble upon, unless you're Sarah.

He could have worked if they developed his character effectively, but in the first season he was primarily this cog in the larger machine and used as a plot device.
