Parades End was pretty good, but it was technically an HBO co-production so it may not count entirely. Other than that I think you're right that having to play for a broad audience is damaging to the quality of the shows. That's an issue that I gather terrestrial TV in the US has as well though.

Drama-wise, Utopia and Broadchurch this year we both very good, but then again they we actually on Channel 4 and ITV respectively. I think The Thick of it is really the only show I can think of where actually swearing is funnier than having it bleeped.
