I had heard nothing about it and saw it out of nowhere, I really liked it. I'm not saying it was great, it had some problems, but I love noir/detective genre so it was quite the pleasent supprise. Plus, Downey Jr.'s and Kilmer's on screen chemistry is great.

The implication that I got was that Brendan was dealing low time dope out of the school with a different partner named Jer. Then Jer started to corrupt emily and bring her into the drug scene so Brendan helped bring him down to protect her.
