My reading of it is that Dave was pretty clueless of what actually happened with Chevy and Dan beyond 'something happened'. Joel didn't know whether to give the long, real answer or an entertaining story for the show so ended up doing a mixture of both. Dave made sure he defended his friend Chevy either way.
