For me it was post S1. And part of it was the knowledge that Josh Schwartz only has one good season in him (see: The OC). I only watched here and there after that. Dan and Blair got me back into the show in S4. Outside of that pairing, I just couldn't care much about the characters, even though I'm fond of the cast.

I guessed it when he took a villainous turn this season. A lot of people online did. But logistically, it makes no sense at all.
