To be fair, he's stopped casting himself as a romantic lead (when he even appears onscreen at all.) The Curse of the Jade Scorpion wouldn't have been very good regardless, but pairing himself up with Helen Hunt was a disaster.

Guess this means it's less likely we'll see Veronica Mars return anytime soon, but you know what? If there's not going to be more, the movie was a good note to go out on.
