Who is Patti Smith? The article assumes I recognise her, like one of those science fiction novels that uses words you've never heard in a roughly familier context. She looks like the pottery teacher at an annoyingly progressive school for wayward teenagers, but hey, who am I to judge?

I met Captain Mal Fillion once. I had been invited to a screening of Serenity, because my friend's wife didn't want to go. (Yeah, I don't get that either.) I got to sit in the reserved section and everything ; right behind the (unoccupied) seat reserved for Adam Baldwin.
All I could say when I shook his hand was,

The audience won't recognise the eponymous hero of Castle, which is basically, "Murder She Wrote", and thus the very definition of generic (all demos) television?
They tip the hat to Firefly, sure, but they know he'll be recognized. He's done shout outs to Cap'n Mal in Castle, too.

Surely, any criticism of this show is a tacit admission that you watch it, which is enough to make any sentient being hang their head in shame. I don't know if I'd vote for a person who admitted to watching this show, never mind buy a used car from them.

Not interesting enough to be offensive, just an insistent, pervasive thrum of sound and colour that subtly reminds you of your mortality and the ultimate futility of any endevour, however well intentioned.

I don't think his real problem was that the kid was white, or French for that matter. His problem was that the kid was dating his daughter, and all that implies. All fathers have dated someone's daughter (some even marry them) and they know what teenage boys are like, having been teenage boys themselves.

Yeah, but, then that would be revealed as a hook, or cold open, or whatever insiders call it, and the rest of the movie could be a, "previously…" and we learn how they got to the situation that led to them being beaten up and thrown out of a penthouse window/being slaughtered by a horde of Uruk-Hai, or whatever.
