The producers mentioned in post-S1 interviews that Cole's big freakout scene ended up radically different not because it was supposed to be but because of issues with the location when they went to shoot the second perspective. (I think it was raining.)

The show's problem with judging, dating back to S1E1 and the way in which he interacted with the idiot who was eliminated that episode, has always been Tom. It just hasn't always been obvious. His body language when things don't go his way gives away everything, and it doesn't seem like he's able to be overruled on…

They were using that as a device to indicate it was triggering a memory. But it wasn't a repressed one.

It feels like Matt's subplot got rewritten off the show in an effort to cool down the "doppelganger overkill" that was going on. Back in S4 it felt like something similar happened where whatever they planned with Bonnie's Dad and Rebekah's BFF just got tossed out the window.
