They just hired the wrong directors, flat out. I give them credit for doing what they can to rectify that mistake, but what a mistake it was. I can't even begin to imagine what they were thinking.
In defense of Ehrenreich, Lord and Miller were apparently directing to go in an Ace Ventura-esque direction. I can see why the higher ups might thing acting lessons were in order.
There's not any one film you have to see to appreciate it, but you'll appreciate it more the longer you've been living with Jackman as Wolverine. In theory, a working knowledge of who Wolverine and Professor X are is enough to be able to watch, but I'd at least watch X-Men, X2, and The Wolverine.
