I'm not sure that Malcolm McDowell and Mary Steenburgen found the romance 'clunky' as they carried the relationship offscreen and eventually married. (Yeah, they later divorced, but who didn't back then)

I started reading the book based on recommendations here, and am very impressed so far. The prose is indeed unique, and the narrative choice really works.. in print. I have not seen the film..
Steve Tobolowski is generally worth watching..ie. the clueless police officer in Thelma and Louise, and the holistic healer in Seinfeld (too much dairy)
