"Well, young Joseph Gordon-Leavitt, I'm an angel."

It's true; guys like Jim Morrison, Elliott Smith, Cobain - it's hard to hate because they created music so intensely for such a short amount of time, and then left the planet (mostly) universally beloved. So I don't know; personally, I've never been a huge Cobain fan, but I can respect his legacy. I just find that

@ MurphyC23: Yes. Can you agree to give Mel Brooks a pass? I'm inclined to, but I feel like one of his movies I can't recall might revoke his pass. Help me out!

@ Mollymauk: Jesus. Robert Plant has one of the most timeless rock voices of all time. It's accepted in AV club circles to hate on and deride popular music, but Plant's voice is groundbreaking and timeless. It's almost impossible to critically pick Zeppelin apart as a band.

Mitch Hedberg
I rest my case.

@ Merk: Second the Debussy, add Bartok, Beethoven, Chopin, Gershwin, Richard Rogers, and Liberace.

@ Subway: I'm with you in giving Phish a free lifetime pass; Story of A Ghost is such an awesome record. Trey Anastasio could put anything out and I'd fall over myself spending my last dime on whatever music he creates.

Still there, if it's the same guy. My most recent memory of Manoa Gardens was of some asshole stealing my Nano last time I was there, right out of my backpack. So I kept drinking; apparently twelve Rogue Dead Guys later, I stumbled back to the dorms and passed out in the Hale Noelani back courtyard.

@ Deus: Really? How are the Aleutians? The closest I've made it down the chain is King Salmon / Naknek, fishing and getting bitten to death by mosquitos on a salmon boat when I was fifteen. I'm here in sunny Anchorage, which looks full of energetic folks emerging from hibernation.

@ Tease: In theory, you're right - it belongs in the same category(s) as Asuza, HPU, etc. It's a big research-and-development school, and appropriates millions in funding for auroral research and work in geophysics, which tends to overshadow its smaller liberal arts programs. I once dated a psychology student from

Ah, I arrived a bit later than that. I was there in 20o7-08, after it was boarded up. It always seemed sad with al the faded promo posters stapled to the walls. You're right; L.A. has a Tower Records that's cavernous. I just attended UH as part of an exchange program, and spend the better part of my time in the

@ Sugartits: Did you know Debbie Reynolds is Carrie Fisher's mother? I've probably seen Singin' In The Rain 20 times and had no idea the two were linked.

"That pinball wizard's got such a supple wrist."

OtP: You worked at the Honolulu Tower Records? On Ke'eaumoku Street? I used to bike down that street from the UH campus every day to Waikiki. Apparently now it's closed. Goddamn digital downloaders and their revolution.

1/4 of the Apple Dumpling Gang.

We don't have any liberal arts schools up here in Alaska, but Idaho shouldn't be knocked for it's freezing weather. It is cold, but not THAT cold. However, there is a large population of white supremacists running around in Idaho like a posse of Klu Klux nomads; I'd add that to the con tally, Riff.

@ CEJ: Oh, I've seen some terrible ones. I once patronized, during what was initially supposed to be a bar-hopping night, a Fairbanks strip club called "Reflections," known in local jargon as "Infections". C-section scars, enormous stretch marks, blackened teeth because of meth. Classy.

I won an incoming freshman prize (at a state school, of course) for designing the English department's unofficial bumpersticker.:

Great "fusical" - it fused political commentary, potty humor, and pop culture references into one hilarious musical!

@ Elitist: You know the very first montage when she initially arrives at their cabin in the mountains? When she's lolling through the "forest" with the mountain backdrop, sparrows fly by and one smacks headlong into the backdrop. Look closely - you'll spot it.
