I really enjoyed the movie, and judging by the disappointment of someone who's already read the book further downthread, it looks like you should just pick one or the other (or see the movie first).

I can totally understand why Cloud Atlas wouldn't be a crowd-pleaser, but I enjoyed it.

I was going to let Cloud Atlas pass me by, but a friend of mine called wanting someone to go see it with him, so I wound up seeing it in IMAX.  I'm really glad I did; I think it's far better than a lot of critics have been reporting (I agree with Keith's B grade).
