It's because all of the kids in Battle Royale have actual backstories and relatable motivations, so it's upsetting when they die.  Most of the tributes in The Hunger Games (which I didn't dislike) are just "that mean girl" or "that nerdy boy".

Heh, and I came here to say that I love the concept of this list, but that Mars Attacks is the polar opposite of underrated.  It holds a firm slot in the 20 Worst Movies I've Ever Seen list, and yet most of my friends adore it.
