Exactly. For whatever reason, when he debuted, I remember thinking that's the only person in the new cast who's in any way intriguing.

I heard an interview recently with Barney Frank where he said, "The Tea Party decided to vote and get their people into government. Occupy Wall Street decided to have drum circles and smoke pot. You can see what turned out to be more effective."
A little harsh, but he's got a point.

The Ed McMahon era was pretaped. There were fewer efforts to spoil results back then, plus it was a syndicated show that aired at different times on different stations, so doing it live wouldn't have been practical anyway.

There was an NBC News Digest around this time where they cued the tape to a false start. The anchor starts stumbling around, gets frustrated, and literally slams his head on the desk. Cut to commercial. Then back to the anchor… "More news later on this NBC station."
