I contend that it would have been foolish to stay. The Shadows don't have a tactical or strategic objective to achieve in the battle, beyond sowing fear and chaos. When they encounter a dangerous and unexpected force, there's nothing to be gained by staying and possibly being wiped out.

The chances they take with the narrative largely pay off, too. The dance sequence, the split-screen, the time jumps, those are the highlights of the film. Which doesn't say much for the story and characters.
