It seemed like back then, shows took alot longer out of the gate to hit their stride. Usually you didn't see a show reach its peak until seasons 3-5. Also, though, they almost always fell right off a cliff after 5 seasons.

There was a streak of weird, absurdist humor running through the 80s. I was going to make the Bloom County comparison too, along with Far Side. Night Court seemed to fit in with those sensibilities and that's why I loved it at first.
