It's not so much that English actors doing American accents were so bad back then.  Charles Laughton had already demonstrated a mastery of several Yank dialects.  It's that these particular British actors are just doing a quick piss-take on American media.

Yeah, "20th Century Vole" shows that when Chapman - the group's designated straight man - iis cast as a nutty character, he really commits to it.  His energy makes this one of the all-time memorable skits.

I don't remember ever seeing Gordon abashed or sorry for anything.  That's an obvious point of difference between him and Dana, as well as the other main characters, and it throws them out of whack as a couple.  He always has her dangling over the fire.
