I suspect the Confederacy is an especially big deal in Mississippi - more so than say, Tennessee - because the state's post-Civil War history has been pretty bleak.  I could be wrong, but the last 150 years don't seem to have been good to it.

There is some credence to the fan theory on "… Thirteen Years Later", in that 1998 was the year that Fox aired a big KISS reunion concert on Halloween Night, so it would make sense for them to want some extra promotion a day or two earlier.
