@avclub-d0cf409eb912cc0cc950b41b6d892d07:disqus It's a nickname for Davos.

There have been three battles, right?  The one in S1 where Tyrion was knocked out, Robb capturing Jaime and the one from this episode?  I think not showing the last two of those worked very well because there wasn't really much build to them and they seemed to be smaller, one-sided battles, so you don't feel like you

Consider also that a lot of the army is made up of farmers called up to fight, not professional soldiers.  An undisciplined peasant army attacked at night by at least one giant wolf in a world that actually does have magic is bound to tell quite a story.

@avclub-23dc117ef9479407fb6c6a666005af40:disqus That was a bit of a thing in S1 though, how the Starks were in their own little world up north (along with the rest of the North too) and quite unprepared for how things worked down in King's Landing.

@avclub-71ded0a5c5ea6f613e50d7d1a413eb5d:disqus A lot of it just isn't shown because it isn't important enough.  At least in Season 1 before all the war breaks out, when they are traveling up and down the continent, the main characters are staying in some kind of inn or castle every night.  It's just that nothing

Jon is probably a good reference for the overall time because Ned came back from the rebellion with him.

I don't think he is or ever was much of a swordsman.  He was a smuggler, so a lot of his skills would've been related to ships and sailing and being a captain.

Because of castles, it's probably not that big a secret.  But then again it's not like people just talk about it all the time, and information doesn't always get around so well.

@avclub-d0cf409eb912cc0cc950b41b6d892d07:disqus They are doing a bit of reconnaissance-in-force to figure out what the hell is going on north of the Wall, with a related side mission of finding out what happened to Benjen Stark.  I don't think they really know for certain that the white walkers are back because the

Tits in a book aren't as attention-grabbing as they are on TV.

Well Jon is really beyond the Wall and out in the middle of nowhere (or places close enough to nowhere), and Dany is past the Dothraki city in the Red Waste.  With a bunch of armies on the move, or about to move, it seems like the only people who are going to stay in cities/castles in the near future would be those in

@avclub-2462a76f718c97cfa773e42865b6ae51:disqus I think Tyrion's chose that particular lie in part because it is something realistic but also because he knew Cersei would flip out about it.

You just have to grind it out.

The one problem with this season and the intro is that three characters (that the show follows) aren't really anywhere of note right now (Jon, Arya and Dany, maybe Catelyn too).  With Theon and Stannis getting ready to go to war, they'll likely be in the field soon too.

@avclub-82cf46948ca0f531a256e38473c9282f:disqus You may have been looking too low.  I watched that part a few times and didn't see the eyes, but then I though I wasn't looking the right place.  They were a "head" or so higher than I was originally expecting them to be.

No he's making a joke about Sam, who told Gilly how he used to read to his mother while she sewed, until his dad found out and told him to stop.

When you play the game of parish council seats, you win or you die?

@avclub-d7f43e1fb2d4977c86163d9b0cb07814:disqus What I meant is that we don't know how long the last winter was.  If it was winter ~7 years ago and the rebellion was something like 9 years ago, then if winter was short enough, it could've been in the summer.

The undead hand probably hasn't made it to King's Landing yet.

Maybe the pooping was one of the many things cut from the books due to time constraints.
