Really, if you like Bond, I don't think any of the movies are completely irredeemable - they just run the gamut from 'awesome' to 'enjoyably stupid'. Golden Gun has the Hornet flip/jump, plus Christopher Lee and Herve Villechaize as villains. No movie with those things can be called bad, or at least un-entertaining.

James Chapman's Licence to Thrill (well worth reading) talks a lot about that, how the series went from setting trends in the 60s to aping them in the 70s - blaxploitation (Live and Let Die), kung fu (Man with the Golden Gun), 'Jaws' (Spy Who Loved Me), Star Wars (Moonraker)…

Ellis' final published story in the series (not counting "Shoot"), "Telling Tales," was one of my favorite one-offs, for how it messed around with just how ridiculous a story people (especially the readers) would be willing to believe.

Maybe Craig's "Bond's" parents just happened to be buried in the same estate churchyard as two people named "Bond." It could be what attracted him to the code name in the first place.

I see the similarities (hero is orphan, chaotic-evil villain), but critics' insistence on making the comparison is  kind of annoying, in that they kind of canonize The Dark Knight series as the benchmark for 'artsy action movie'.

Not only that, in Memento and Inception the main character's key final decision (choice to live ambiguous/fantasy world) and their motivations (guilt over inadvertently causing his wife's death) are pretty much the same.
