Farmer John, that quote needs to be on the cover the novel's next edition.

I put a version of this in Donna's thread earlier, but since this is the fresher thread, here goes.

Of course, this also mirrors Arty and his resentment of norms.

I believe that is correct, CC. I'm just not sure that Arty's idea of "help" is that cut and dried. To me, the puzzle pieces are Arty's reaction to Mumpo after his birth, (and the way he unsuccessfully tried to kill Chick earlier) and Elly's attitude towards the pregnancy in the first place. I feel like there is a

Not long before Elly killed Mumpo, there was a bit where Arty actually seemed to be wanting a faster recovery for Elly after her lobotomy. Chick mentions it, I believe. I wondered at the time why Arty was so interested in the recovery of what was probably his greatest enemy in the book. Now I wonder if he needed

I agree about the telekinesis - it did seem a bit overtly fantasy for the setting. Also, the whole rise of Arty's "ministry" seemed a bit far-fetched, in that he had created this infrastructure with hospice branches out of what is essentially a pyramid scheme. Not only did I feel it difficult to imagine them getting

Don't be. If you've gotten that far, I don't think anything left in the book will be at a higher layer of creepiness.

Wilco II: Tangled up in Sue.

Yeah, Napoleon Dynamite unculted itself really quickly.

Have the original Zeitgeist of Careful. Makes me wonder exactly how one re-masters Maddin. Cleaning it up sort of ruins the aesthetic.

Working my way through Geek Love now.

Good call about Perfect Blue, Commodore. It's actually the only Kon anime that I've seen, and it didn't make me want to go further. This NCC entry, though, may just make me change my mind.

Bacon and peanut butter didn't make Elvis better, either.

Whorin's so much tougher now. Craigslist ain't even safe!

I thought Planet Terror was more entertaining than Death Proof, but if the original experiment was to really make real grindhouse type homages, Tarantino's was truer to the aesthetic. Planet Terror kind of cheated a bit in the production department with all of the CGI. And I could really have done without the QT

I never saw Grindhouse in theatres, but I have seen the extended versions of Planet Terror and Death Proof. I remember seeing the Machete trailer on the PT DVD, and thinking I would much rather see that than either of the two Grindhouse films. Now I guess I'll get my chance, maybe.

Oh, wow, Anne of Green Gables! Matthew's death got me three times. Book, series (it didn't hurt that it was played by Richard Farnsworth) and in Megan Follows audiobook reading. The trifecta!

Tasha, the "Superman" in Iron Giant does it to me, too.

I'd think a just written autobiography by a decade deceased, abstact expressionist elephant would be a publishing win.

"The Day of Creation" is an amazing book, even amongst the other amazing Ballard books. A second Nile river is created in Africa is created inadvertently during a public works project, and it becomes a battleground between local warloads, while the river's creator journey's to the river's source. As a book, it is
