In the MK2 edition, the title says "…based on an idea by Orson Welles. Welles originally approached Chaplin to direct him as the ladykiller. Instead, Chaplin bought the idea from Welles.

I fucking love this film. To put some perspective, if you told some guy who has a very vague notion of Chaplin as the Little Tramp, that he made a talkie where he was a lady killer, he would inmediately call B.S. And dismiss the execution of the idea as preposterous.
