In practice, making new plastic is cheaper than recycling old plastic, so the stuff most often ends up discarded or shipped off to some other country with different economies of plastic. But with mining and trees and whatnot, new aluminum and paper are more expensive than recycled…

I don't think that's true. Someone mentioned upthread that plastic bags of milk are easier to store during transportation, and that's the main environmental benefit.

And then we send the empties to China, where they burn them to get recyclable plastic.
