Disagree about the hair. They kept Bullock's hair short because to have it long and moving all over the place would really have distracted the viewer from the story.  The way it was in the film, it wasn't far off from reality in a way that mattered.

Strip mining populated planets for minerals is probably the ultimate nitpickable trope.  It's like running past 1000 piles of diamonds laying on the sidewalk just to mug a woman for her engagement ring.
