It's bad by Coen Bros. standards to be sure.
I'd also argue it's bad by Tom Hanks standards.
Heck, it's even pretty bad by remake standards.
In a nutshell, it's not good.
As I'm pretty sure I've said before on this site, if anyone but Hitchcock had made Family Plot, it would likely be hailed as a clever '70s thriller-comedy. It's a fun ride from start to finish, IMHO, it's just not any kind of masterpiece so it gets dismissed easily. I'm willing to bet good money that if you showed it…
Yeah, I'm a fan too and never quite understood why it's usually dismissed by Brooks fans.
One of my greatest disappointments in life is that I've never been to a karaoke bar that has "High Anxiety" available.
Agreed, especially given that it's not particularly ha-ha funny or anything at the script level. Its humor is derived mostly from the love of its source material and the obvious joy of the actors inhabiting the roles.
Definitely Wilder's baby. And one of the best stories about it is that Wilder apparently refused to do it unless Brooks promised NOT to act in it. Good call, Gene.
A friend recently posted on FB that, having not seen Saddles in decades, he showed it to his young son and was kinda horrified by all the racist and rape jokes (all of which he'd laughed at uproariously when he was the same age as his kid.) His conclusion was that it did not hold up.
I told him that with an attitude…
"Saddles is Brooks’ first movie spoof, but rather than sending up a
specific film, as he would do later, he takes aim at the underlying
themes of the Western genre."
Don't let Pepe hear you call him a shrimp! He's a king prawn!
And why didn't they keep Fozzie's best joke from the promo?
"I have to run home and change my clothes."
"All you wear is a necktie."
"So I'll walk."
He's also been putting up with Piggy and the rest of these crazies for 40 years. I think he's allowed to have grown a little less patient and a little more bitter.
I enjoyed this. A little creaky still but hey, it's a pilot.
What I did not enjoy was the snotty, unnecessary, and completely unfounded swipe at Muppets From Space in this review. I have no idea how anyone who seems upset at the lack of Gonzo in this single episode could hate on AN ENTIRE MOVIE about him.
I can't…
Great Job, Commenter!
Let me be the first to say, this is a terrible, pointless idea.
Sure, I may not ACTUALLY be the first to say this but I plan to put together an AVClub Comments supercut which will prove I actually was. Great Job, Me!
Nothing was "buoying" The Office by that time Ellie Kemper showed up, least of all a character as poorly written as hers. Nothing against the actress, she did the best with what she was given, but Erin didn't bring anything to the table except strained wackiness on an already off-the-rails show IMHO.
OKLAHOMA! OKLAHOMA! OKLAHOMA! OKLAHOMA! OKLAHOMA! OKLAHOMA! OKLAHOMA! OKLAHOMA! OKLAHOMA! OKLAHOMA!
I honestly think it might be my very favorite Martin performace. He is such a wonderful jerk and he plays off Kermit and Piggy so masterfully. In a movie filled with walk-on celebrity cameos his appearance is one of the only actual characters. (I think it might also be Mel Brooks's best onscreen performance for…
You really think that people who already have no issue stealing content would watch inferior versions just because they're legal?
I heard a rumor that comicbook.com was a terrible source for anything but unsubstantiated twaddle. Oh wait, that's not a rumor at all, it's an obvious fact based on the link.
In 6+ minutes of seemingly just randomly chosen "villains" (that contains numerous repeats, no less) no time could be found to include Clarence Boddicker!? (Or Bob Morton or Dick Jones for that matter?) Terrible, terrible, awful job, Internet.
