Now I'm left wondering how Bismuth would have viewed Sapphire, who's as upper crust as they get, but defected and is in a stable relationship with Ruby. Fanfic writers, get on it!

I think it's definitely the sort of joke only Bismuth could make, I'd guess it comes from the early days when Pearl and she were still kicking off their programming, since they both seem to be at the bottom of Homeworld's heap, and a bit of levity was much needed. Plus, back in ye' olde days, something like Pearl

Garnet is black coded but is also a lot more conventionally attractive than Bismuth, small waist, hips, oval face. Bismuth reads as much more muscular, and even masculine. Steven Universe definitely has issues with having the traditionally "male" looking gems be violent and warlike, see Jasper as well. Overall it's

I wouldn't say so, the Gems have definite cooperative collectivist leanings and the organized uprising of the working classes is not exactly libertarian 101. If pressed I would describe them as 19th century utopian anarchists.

Rose was wrong, in that she bubbled Bismuth and hid it. In this case bubbling without intent to release is not exactly moral, but clearly preferable to the screaming semi consciousness of shards.

Gem society is feudal, not capitalistic. Everything in it's place and a place for everything. In this case Gem communism refers more to the Crystal Gem's goal of tearing down the bourgeois and creating a society where all are free to excel according to their merits, not their inherited status.

Except they clearly aren't. Gems are ruled by those who are made to rule, with no exceptions made for merit or learning. Gems are expected to fill the roles they are born into, much like in a strict feudal society, but Pearl is proof that that is a broken system. Gems are capable of so much more than they are allowed

I'm even more sure now that Rose killed Pink Diamond. After all that talk, she was the one that went in for the killing blow and it must have killed her.

Gem communism just went hardcore.

I'll admit the apron seemed weird until I realized she's going for more of an industrial aesthetic than a shirtless art teacher one. As for the nipples…. we already crossed the boundary with Suspenders Ruby.

Me and my burly blacksmith wife definitely aren't inviting YOU to our wedding reception.

Rose almost definitely saw Amethyst as the perfect experiment. Here was a gem without any of Homeworld's hangups, or Homeworld's broken societal statutes. Amethyst was a chance to get it right, to raise a gem to be kind and free and open, a gem without any of the crippling emotional issues Homeworld left Pearl, and

The egotistic, stubborn orange person slot is already filled, sorry.

Lapis and Peridot seem to have slotted Steven in as "weird not-quite gem" in their mental schemas though, whereas Jasper is all too aware that Steven is, on some level, a gem. Jasper has an immediate reference, so Steven goes attached to Rose Quartz in her brain, Lapis and Peridot aren't quite so attached to the idea.

"You ruined the ruins!"

The fact that Amethyst is literally Funsized makes me inordinately happy.

Peridot and Lapis demonstrated that the first step to making the villain your friend is to make the villain pitiable. Jasper is well on her way to becoming a Fight of the Week Opponent who just gets more and more desperate and slightly pathetic every episode, as the Rubies bring word of her arrest warrant and the gem

"I guess she just lives in the ocean now"

Jasper is nothing but raw, she's exactly two steps away from being a pro wrestler or having her own gem survival show where she torments quartz war vets.

Steven is historically not the sort of person to ask questions until things get personal, he's a kid and kids have short attention spans. If the CGs were uncomfortable talking about it (which they clearly are) Steven probably shrugged his shoulder and accepted it as a sad fact of life, since without his healing powers
