The Southern Gothic veneer covered up a lot of the hard-boiled detective cliches. Setting this season in Los Angeles, complete with a land-grab conspiracy, puts every trope right out in the open.
This is the same series where a detective steals a brick of cocaine from the evidence locker and causes a roaming shootout through an entire city project ("just to get one guy!" and it's glossed over by the next episode.
