I don't think it's just the awards he cares about; he is very passionate and hyper-aware about the power that art has in people's lives (and I think that's a very respectable thing to be passionate about). He recognizes the awards cycle as being necessary to the success of art, and you can tell how frustrated he gets…
He's doing something completely harmless/benign (attempting to subtly market an album in advance of its release), and you're calling him obnoxious for it. Seems like more of a swift reaction than a well thought out judgement to me
