Fan made trailers are an interesting addition to this discussion; it goes along with what Noel said about how fans can come into films or comment on them before they see it with their minds made up.  But they can be interesting examples of how fans can have a clearer sense of a properties appeal than studios.

Comment boards have such an insular feel to them that it's easy to forget they are basically public forums, and when you read or post on a particular one a lot you can get desensitized to how low the level of discourse is/can seem to someone who's just checking out what's being said.
