I felt that way too.   I didn't mind the bizarre for the hell of it/deep, ponderous stuff (I couldn't really tell the difference) but I did mind the "sex as destiny" discussions Kafka would get in to.  The scene where Oshima explains his orientation just drove me nuts.  What was the point of him exactly?

I always suggest reading Wild Sheep Chase / Dance Dance Dance back to back.  They aren't elegant, but they're trippy, fun, thoughtful time capsules to the days when American's were afraid the Japanese would take over the world.
