I hear praises about the music and animation and characterization and so forth but I have seen a couple of episodes and I don't see it. Sure, they try to do far more than just being another merchandise-centered franchise and they do succeed in this regard and has some positive messages, but beyond that is somewhere…
My thoughts exactly. They keep praising the animation and writing but it seems rather run-of-the-mill to me, especially compared to Gravity Falls and Adventure Time.

Perhaps they finally where getting the hang of writing hour-long episodes? Well, not so much with Horace Ford, since it was an adaptation of what, I assume is, longer than half-hour performance, but "On Thursday" is pure poetry and a tremendous use of a sci-fi setting without being gimmick-y.
Is Joe Pesci a Genie and Robert De Niro a cowboy in your mental images too?
