The gun would hold six, and it would work, it would just be dangerous to carry around, or leave in a desk drawer. But if you were expecting action you could indeed fill the last chamber. In "True Grit" Charles Portis — as historically literate a writer as you're going to find — writes that Rooster Cogburn "got out his

It's a fair question, for sure. I guess it comes down to whether the important thing is the audience counting the cartridges or not. If they do count five, it can still be dismissed as historically accurate, so if that was the intent addressing it in dialogue would not have been amiss.

That's been covered pretty extensively in these comments, but the article is right, the live rounds are what is significant, not how many. Five rounds is just how they loaded revolvers in those days.

People are making too much of this. Five rounds was standard, five rounds is exactly what Bob would expect, especially of a gun just taken out of a desk drawer. You didn't have to listen through every track, they were usually divided into four "programs" of two or three songs each. You could click to a different program, but beyond that you had to let the songs play through.

It was "Buzz or Howl Under the Influence of Heat," but I'm good with that too. And I'll take "More Fun in the New World" over all of 'em.
