If you do some homework (DVD Bonus Materials I believe) Siddig says he was all for the character being naive and unbearable at the beginning of the show.  That gave him room to grow and mature the character over the course of the show.  And he blows the part out of the water later.

Phodreaw, I'm agreed with you.  Especially after they had to spend so many hours in the make-up chair just to get on the set and contributed so much to the show.  On the other hand, it was great seeing them as a guest star credits at the beginning of an ep if they weren't in the teaser.  I always got those"AWWWWW HELL…
