@avclub-cfe912f5cb3aa572bd1c9ae2a9b82207:disqus That's weird. I KNOW there was a contest, I remember it distinctly, because I kept asking myself (even at a young age) how the hell they were going to do a talk show with a superhero. They were running superhero action cartoon marathons like they were going out of style.

Agreed. And this is one of the major flaws of auteur theory, and one of the reasons I don't really follow it that much in terms of criticism. It's great as a jumping off point, but after a while it becomes too much navel-gazing and dick-sucking. I never bother to read the "season walkthroughs" for example.

I'm weird, but I'm a huge fan of Lokar. Just his way of talking (like an audience surrogate of the high-class kind) makes me grin like an idiot. Also, it's odd, but I think he's animated the best. Something about the way he speaks and moves "works". I think it's because his original character design is just great.

As a quick followup - SGC2C didn't necessarily come from nowhere. There was some kind of planning behind it, since it came from a contest where viewers got to vote for their favorite HB action cartoon superhero and the winner got his own talk show (obviously, Space Ghost won).

Keep in mind (and I think this is what you were getting at) is that early Cartoon Network showed nothing BUT Hanna-Barbara cartoons, so even if you only grew up in the 90s, if you watched the network long enough, the references where still understandable. You didn't have to just grow up in the 70s.

I actually was there during the original first airing of Adult Swim; there were no commercials or ads for it. They just AIRED the thing. Prior to DVR and being aware of scheduling, I was simply watching what I assumed was the next episode of SGC2C. It came on, but then it was Sealab, and Harvey Birdman, then Aqua

I am laughing so hard because this is a thing. A REAL thing.
