I don't think my parents have ever been uncomfortable watching anything with me. Probably because they intellectualize everything.

I enjoyed it, though it wandered all over the place, and the characters weren't terribly well developed or even plausible. It's more warmed-over Charlie Kaufman (and not quite getting there, but with its own special craziness) than warmed-over Tarantino. But it's funny. Awesome set pieces and a surprisingly moving

I just started watching it after they re-aired the pilot a couple of weeks ago. At first I was only interested in Nolan's Whedon-y dialogue and the mystery of the immortal dog, but the show has grown on me. (Watching the recap clip show and fan-edited highlights on YouTube helped.) Emily VanCamp can actually act, and

Multiple narrators, ironic framing, protagonists whom we are encouraged to see as horrible if compelling people: take away all that, and you have Twilight. You probably don't need to omit the necrophilia and sadism, just soft focus them a little. Also, have both generations alive at the same time, so it becomes a soap

That book freaked me out, as I was a sheltered seventh grader who had no idea what "shooting smack" meant till I read it. Though Dinky Hocker never actually shot smack, correct? I remember her being the overweight narrator with some angst issues, but that could be wrong.

I thought The Breakfast Club was formally daring and exciting at 16, because I'd never seen a movie that stayed in one place like a bottle episode. It took Pretty in Pink to make me realize Hughes was, well, not so daring, though I still liked Ferris Bueller.

Interesting! I wonder how common that kind of proto-social-media experience was.

I've heard of this Manny Farber thing. I'm not sure what it means. I do know Armond White has totally misunderstood Pauline Kael's essay on "Trash, Art and the Movies," because she wasn't actually saying that celebrating trash as trash is always better than desiring something with more artistic pretensions. Just that,

That's the second positive review of a Bradley Cooper performance I have read in the same 24 hours when I was subjected to The Words. Cognitive dissonance.

I was very briefly popular in sixth grade because I had a copy of this. All the socially savvy and mean girls were eager to read it in those pre-Cinemax, pre-internet times.

He was the best part of Hit and Run aside from cars smashing each other, but that isn't saying much. And by "best," I mean most floridly absurd.
