I'm not sure about psychiatrists, but I know that psychologists are allowed to engage in intimate relationships with a patient if they have not had any contact of any kind for 3 full years. I think there are a couple other caveats but I'm blanking on them.

There are actually a bunch of similarities between Alex and Victoria (from HIMYM). They both had midseason arcs that were basically the first forays the protagonist had into serious dating. Their courtship and dating sequences were put together basically over one or two episodes. And both served as catalysts/plot
