the cronenberg syndrome
this whole thread sums up exactly how i feel about every david cronenberg movie i've ever seen. he's so fucking great at creating these gorgeous, atmospheric, eerie worlds for his stories then shits it all away in the third act. i'll continue to watch them, but i hope at some point i'll stop

surprise
such a scathing review of one of the weirdest moives of the last decade from the man who stood in defense of the equally weird and wonderful 'freddy got fingered'.

wire/big fish
since there seems to be a lot of 'wire' death talk going on i'm going to ring in for butchie. both omar and bodie's deaths left me strangely depressed and angry despite the fact that both were marked since the begining. and bodie's especially because his death finally redeems him. but the torture and

way too many thoughts, but it's the internets so i'll post em anyway
dahl is definitely one of the best children's fiction writers and i'm not surprised that so may a.v. clubbers and fans count him as a favorite, as do i. i was a little bummed that 'matilda' got snubbed, though. i'd say it's his best work and the

you are all fucking old
please cull the a.v. club. i'd be happy to help fill in some of the voids. also, i'm not old.

nerd boner
i have one about this. plus a sex-bob-omb song written by beck (beck!) doubble nerd bboonneerr.

simpson's formula
as mentinoed in this article a lot of the great 'seimpson's' episodes started off one way then ended another. my favorite example of this has always been the episode that starts off during one of springfield's worst heat waves and ends with the simpsons in a junk yard teaching garry coleman the true

pixies? lsf?
sure "where is my mind" and "velouria" are the epitome of the pixies canon, but there are so many great songs on their albums that get shrouded by "that song from 'fight club.'" "letter to memphis" and "motorway to roswell" come to mind, and why they chose to end 'trompe le monde' and their reign with

but seriously
mad men makes me want to drink scotch and smoke

what was that thing?
we used to eat it all the time back in the day?

tosser
it's a toss up between listening to al green's greatest hits on the way to and from my job at mcdonald's every day for a few months (good memory) or the day-and-a-half long loop of b-list pop-country music that would recycle the shit day after day when i worked at a hardware store one summer (bad memory). by

this movie
sucked. a lot. overrated tripe. and definitely not worthy of the oscar d.w. nabbed for it. fuck this fucking heap of fuck.

love/hate
i've had a love/hate relationship with comedy albums ever since i heard adam sandler's 'they're all gonna laugh at you' and albert brooks' 'comedy minus one' as kid. yeah, they're both funny as shit the first time. maybe the second time, but spins three through three thousand offer such diminish returns on

inches
les savy fav's 'inches' is an amazingly solid collection of the band's mostly non-album singles. save for a few lie/alternate takes this is almost enirely new material and all of it, form the more recent first tracks to the oldest closers is indespensible post-punk from one of the best bands of the late

no robin williams
sometime around the release of 'patch adams' i gave up on robin williams. his old stand up is painfully scattered and hard to watch. i almost stopped reading 'garp' because i found out he played garp in the adaptation, at least until i found out garp dies in the end, in which case i gleefully read

great article!
wish i'd read it sooner, but definitely some new territory to investigate.

agreed
i'm pretty split between erik and josh's choices. the "37 clerks" article was a near permanent fixture in the office of our college radio station from o'two until the great renovation of o'five. and yes, i am that asshole that picks "sister ray" on the juke box because (one) it's awesome and (b) you get your

can't wait
for st. patrick's day so i can fill my stomach with the color green, too!

context
if you watch this pretending it's gay bondage porn it's just as terrible, but marginally funnier.

it can't be any worse
than the abortive 'last days'. gvs is one of most overrated directors of ever. he and ollie stone can start a club together.
