A mixed bag
Eno - the Ambients and 'Singing Albums', especially "Before and After Science"
Ron Sexsmith - cheers me up up in a downbeat way
Nick Drake - see above
…and many, many more

Punk and others
I was a teen when it broke in 1976,and it was a seismic shift. However, I didn't abandon my love for the so-called dinosaurs of rock (like Pink Floyd, who also made a big impression, but it certainly reinvigorated my passion for music that lasts until this day.

Some suggestions
"Hoover Factory" - Elvis Costello
"Long, Long, Long" - The Beatles (well, GH really)
Any drone track on Yo La Tengo's later albums

Good, comprehensive book on Dub?
Can anyone recommend one?

modell & phipps
Costello and The Wedding Present - good choices, sirs!

One other thing
Julian Cope has written a couple of good books on German and Japan music (he has a thing with Axis countries' post WWII music output. That and LSD).

Interesting…
…as I've just got into them (that's what young people say, isn't it?)

"Needless to say,…
…I had the last laugh"

What was in Alan's drawer?
The Partridge Linton Travel Tavern MacGuffin…well, sort of…
