After three seasons of playing the same character with amusingly different accents, I assume she's pretty tired.
That's certainly a possibility if Pizzolato wants to stay on, but I don't know if HBO would be okay with that.

I can definitely see the show continuing without Pizzolatto. Since it's an anthology show, there doesn't really have to be any consistency. And since Cary Fukunaga is already leaving, next season will obviously be quite different.
It was certainly a good parallel to the petty nastiness of the human villains.
