It was originally an industry event intended to attract investors, let industry pros network, cater to members of the press, and gladhand retailers. More of this can be done online or at cheaper events these days.

It's more overstimulating than a comic book convention or a roleplaying convention of similar size, if that's any help. The flashing screens, installations, and giveaways are gaudier.
