If they'd done a better job setting everything up, I don't think I'd have minded all the time spent outside of the Matrix. Not to keep making LotR comparisons, but: It's sort of like getting to Return Of The King and having to juggle Frodo/Sam/Gollum (Neo here) and LITERALLY EVERYONE ELSE (literally everyone else)…

I've always argued that the second movie does a lot of really interesting things to expand on the first movie or in other cases completely flip the first movie's ideas on their head. It's a bit bloated, maybe, but it was unusual and interesting enough to me along the way.
