I haven't seen Dexter yet - when I worked at a video store it was so popular every time I got the notion to watch it someone would have the 1st season checked out - but are you afraid that show and The Sopranos are letting its main characters off the hook by sentimentalizing them? Because if that's the case, it is

I don't remember the mirror scene in it, but "Songwriter" is such a great and unsung movie I'm happy to see it mentioned anyway. Has the AV Club ever done a Primer on Alan Rudolph, because he's a director who hasn't always gotten his due.

It's a toss-up what my favorite line from the movie is - the first time I saw it, my favorite was Kaylee's "twixt my nethers" line (or "Hell with this, I'm gonna live!", which drew the loudest applause when I saw the movie in the theater), then the next time, it was Jayne's "I'd kill a man in a fair fight" speech.

I had tried watching the series, but residual anger over what had been done in the last couple of seasons of Buffy (yes, I'm one of those who think Spuffy and "magic addiction" and the Trio of Dim and bringing back a villain that was rightly dismissed as "All right, I get it; you're evil!" as the Big Bad of Season 7

I know a lot of people probably avoided Birth because of the dreaded "r" word - reincarnation - but it really is such a great movie, and Savides had a lot to do with that. Without ever calling attention to itself, the cinematography just fits the tone of the movie so well (along with Alexandre Desplat's music, which

Anyone here see "The Spitfire Grill"? It's not a good movie - it's movies like this that probably led people to roll their eyes at acclaimed and award-winning movies from Sundance - but she's very good in it as a neglected housewife. If the movie had solely been about the friendship between her and Allison Elliot's

I agree. The final parade sequence, where she and Laura Linney's character stare at each other, and it's clear just how broken Harden's character has become, is devastating to watch.
