Pollock is a pretty good movie - if nothing else, it proves no matter what the prevailing wisdom at the time was, a little kid definitely could *not* have painted what Pollock did - and Harris is very good, but the movie is too by-the-numbers for me, and I do think Harden gets stuck with some ridiculous lines like the

As good as everyone else is in the movie - Polito, Finney and Turturro especially - she and Gabriel Byrne were the only ones who made me go, "Wow, who is that? I need to pay attention to what they do next?" Verna needs to be someone who can stand up to everyone else - if this movie had actually been made in the 30's

It starts out being this modern-day Damon Runyon movie, which is kind of fun - although Treat Williams is annoyingly one-note - and Lloyd is very good in it. But then, when everyone has to be killed off, it turns unwatchable. It's too bad, because of all of the Tarantino knock-offs, this one at least had the potential

I was also surprised at how short it was, and at the screening I saw it at last night, a few customers were asking the theater manager if something had been cut out. Though I don't know how far they could have stretched this.

I didn't mind the political aspect either, because it's connected with the family aspect. And yes, Boothe has played this character so often he can play it in his sleep, but he did it well. Plus, it was nice to see Bunny Colvin - er, Robert Wisdom as the other mayoral candidate.

My biggest problem with the show, actually, is the music, which presented a quandary for me; can you like a music-oriented drama when you like the drama but not the music? I understand Juliette is supposed to be a take-off on Taylor Swift and you're not supposed to like the music she sings (even though, it must be

I didn't think she was bad either, and I say that as someone who's not a fan. Even as you knew she was trying to steal Rayna's guitarist/former lover (Deacon?) because (1) she could, and (2) to piss off Rayna, she did also make you believe she was actually a fan of his. That's more nuance than I would have expected

That's a good point, especially in regards to the fact if Verhoeven had made a "straight" version of Heinlein's novel, it would be damn near unwatchable, except maybe on an action-movie level.

I don't rate this episode as highly as "War Stories" - I do find it difficult to believe anyone would seriously think River had "become" the spaceship - but it is a good episode, and you can see where the show might have gone had it been allowed to continue (aside from the Big Damn Movie, that is).
