    Yeah but it's like, on the page, these scripts are calling for a character to suffer an attempted rape, violently fight back, and then the next day chew out her attempted rapist for not spending more time with her son.  These scripts have the character of Lori telling her husband that he really ought to kill the man

    I think that was the problem here — audiences have shown extraordinary resistance to any genre period movies, particularly if they take place around the turn of the 20th century.  It's hard to know if it's the period that's turning audiences off, or if it's the almost uniformly terrible quality of the obvious examples

    On the other hand, Merkert's speech about "He was right under my nose the whole time" seems to suggest that Merkert wasn't involved with Gus, as many have suggested.  If he had been involved, there's no way he would bother telling that story about a family BBQ — it wouldn't be relevant to anything.
